It's important to understand that not all omega-3s are created equal! Currently, the omega-3/omega-6 ratio in Western diets is often between 10 and 25 omega-6 for 1 omega-3, whereas ideally it should be around 4:1. An imbalance between omega-3s and omega-6s promotes inflammation, since omega-6s, in excess, can produce pro-inflammatory mediators, thus disturbing the balance of the microbiota. Omega-3s, found in fatty fish, nuts and seeds, and certain oils, help reduce inflammation and improve cardiovascular health.
Adequate intake of omega-3s has a positive influence on this ratio, which is essential for good health. Increasing omega-3 intake can help restore a balanced ratio, creating a more favorable environment for a healthy microbiota and reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, inflammatory disorders and metabolic disorders.
To incorporate more omega-3s daily, consider using omega-3-rich oils such as camelina oil and canola oil, while reducing consumption of omega-6-rich oils such as soybean, safflower, sunflower and grapeseed oil.
