Lin brun et lin jaune : quelles différences ?

Brown flax and golden flax: what are the differences?

At Ferme Tournevent, we grow two varieties of flaxseeds: brown flax and yellow flax. Although they share a very similar nutritional foundation, some differences may guide your choice depending on your tastes and uses.

🔸 Brown flax

Brown flax is the most widespread and well-known variety.

Characteristics:

  • Slightly more pronounced taste, with a nutty note

  • Texture a bit more distinct once ground

  • Very versatile in the kitchen

Common uses:

  • Breads and bakery products

  • Oatmeal, cereals, yogurts

  • Smoothies and savory recipes

👉 This is an excellent choice for those who use flaxseeds regularly and enjoy their more assertive flavor.

🔸 Yellow flax (also called golden flax)

Yellow flax stands out for its paler color and milder taste.

Characteristics:

  • More delicate and neutral flavor

  • Integrates easily without changing the taste of recipes

  • Lighter appearance, ideal for certain preparations

Common uses:

  • Fine pastries (muffins, cookies, cakes)

  • Smoothies and drinks

  • Recipes where a discreet flavor is desired

👉 It is often preferred by people who are discovering flaxseeds or who are looking for a subtle daily addition.

A more limited production

Compared to brown flax, yellow flax is much less cultivated and is mostly grown organically. Its availability is therefore more limited in food markets, which explains why this variety remains largely unknown to most consumers.

Nutritional value: almost identical

👉 Both varieties offer substantially the same nutritional benefits, notably:

  • an excellent fiber content,

  • a richness in omega-3 (ALA),

  • a high concentration of antioxidant lignans.

Choosing between brown flax and yellow flax is therefore primarily a question of taste, aesthetics, and culinary use.

🌿 In conclusion

✔️ to buy your flaxseeds whole
✔️ to choose a format adapted to your habits
✔️ to grind them just before use
✔️ to store them correctly to preserve their freshness
✔️ to integrate them into your diet daily for their health benefits

👉 A simple little gesture that makes a big difference for quality and benefits.
